Our Story
Marilyn Nash
Our story starts in 1980 when Hollywood actress Marilyn Nash, Hollywood writer Roy Zehren, Carol McCabe, and Frank Castello performed one acts and read poetry in a little backyard in Oroville, CA. Thanks to an impassioned poetry reading by Marilyn Nash, the group gained momentum in Oroville, creating enough buzz in the community to require seeking out an official building to call home.
The Birdcage Theatre was founded in 1984 as an all-volunteer community theater group. It is located at 1740 Bird Street, in a building that previously served as the offices for the Oroville Mercury-Register. The inaugural play, "Second Time Around", was directed by Roy Zerhen.
The Birdcage Theatre continues to be operated on an all-volunteer basis and provides so much to the community of Oroville, such as an affordable and educational children's theatre program and as the only continuous source of ongoing live theatre in our small town. We not only provide a valuable outlet to enjoy in live theater and performing arts events in the community, but to also obtain an education in acting, directing, set design, stage management, light/sound tech. Just recently the Birdcage Theatre has received an award from the city and the community as the Best Hobby, Arts, and Culture Experience in Oroville.
The theatre has survived economic hard times and pandemics, but one thing continues to plague the theatre - the roof. Over the years, due to limited means, the previous boards have been able to patch the leaks on the roof but were unable to solve the problem completely. As our new board has been established, we see that this problem needs to be fixed once and for all to create permanent stability for the theatre and for the sustainability of arts in Oroville.
